The Traveling Painter, The Rebel Painter, At Sea with Henri Landier, The Metamorphoses Cycle are some of the book titles that illustrate Henri Landier’s principal creative periods.
It was in 1991 that I became acquainted with this French painter who was then exhibiting a series of large landscapes of the Champagne.
From this meeting came the exhibition at Erenstein Castle. Some of the important works from this exhibition remained in the Netherlands and now enrich the Couvenzall at the Castle of St. Gerlach.
From time to time, over the following years, I visited his magnificent workshop in old Montmartre, where the spirit of his illustrious neighbour, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, still haunts his favorite places.
It was the beginning of a friendship. Henri visited Maastricht several times and was very impressed by this magical city. For my sixtieth birthday he painted my portrait in front of the Meuse and the cathedral. And then he had an idea for a prodigious exhibition...
In 2000, while visiting the great Rembrandt exhibition at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, which assembled all of the Master’s self portraits, Henri Landier painted from morning to night. And he remembered that when he was ten and encountered Rembrandt’s 1660 self portrait in the Louvre, he had been so impressed that he decided to become a painter himself.
Seventy years later, as he approaches his eightieth birthday, this exhibition presents his personal homage to his “Master”.
In his preface to the 2000 exhibition, Frederik J. Duparc wrote : “The Rembrandt self portraits have preserved the countenance of the artist for posterity."
His paintings, etchings and drawings offer a unique witness to the evolution of his physiognomy, from his beginnings in Leyden, when he was still only a young artist searching his path, to his last years in Amsterdam, forty years later.”
With this impressive collection, Henri Landier now seems to take on Rembrandt’s mantle, letting us contemplate his own seventy masterpieces; painted from 2000 to 2013, they chronologically follow the life and work of the Dutch Master.
Now, at Henri Landier’s request and to our greatest delight, they will be shown for the first time in the land of Rembrandt’s birth, at TEFAF Maastricht.
